Tuolumne County is nestled in the Sierra Nevada’s in the central part of California. The northern half of Yosemite National Park is located in the eastern part of the county. It is one of the original 27 California counties from 1850.

The county spans an area of 2,274 square miles and has a population of more than 57,000 residents. Many features attract visitors to the county each year, such as historic god mining towns, the Emigrant Wilderness, Yosemite National Park as well as several lakes and rivers.

The men and women of the Tuolumne Sheriff’s Department strive to protect residents and visitors and provide support to the community. Partnerships with community members serve to enhance the level of service provided by the Department.

In addition to Patrol and Investigative services to the county, Sheriffs Deputies also provide a Marine Enforcement Unit, a Narcotics Team, and Special Weapons and Tactics Team.

Marine Enforcement patrols navigable waterways throughout the county on a regular basis. There are eight lakes that make a total of over 50 square miles of waterway in Tuolumne County.

The Tuolumne Narcotics Team is responsible for investigating every aspect of narcotics and dangerous drug violations. The team consists of one sergeant, five investigators and one office manager. The team’s mission is to reduce the number of illegal drugs being manufactured, sold and used in the county.

The county’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) is trained to handle incidents classified as “high risk.” The team consists of a team commander, team leader, entry team and a React/ Rescue team. Many of the team members are experts in specialized areas, such as weaponless defense, advanced tactical firearms, chemical agents, rappelling, sniper and emergency medical.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the care of inmates in custody at the jail and maintaining a humane facility, ensuring the safety of employees and the community.

Anyone wishing to visit an inmate at this facility must schedule visits in advance, calling between 6:00 am and 12:00 pm on the day of the visit to set an appointment. Days and times for visitation can be obtained by calling the jail.

The jail has a telephone debit account program that allows family and friends of inmates to add funds to an inmate’s telephone debit account. Funds are linked to the inmate’s ID and can be used to call any telephone number that isn’t blocked by the system.

Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are available for inmates. Inmates also have access to bible study, the law library and GED training.

The City of Sonora was incorporated in 1851, making it one of the oldest cities in California. The Sonora Police Department provides local law enforcement for residents and visitors alike. The Department is comprised of a police chief, a lieutenant, three sergeants, and twelve sworn officers. There is also a school resource officer, communications-records supervisor, three full-time and five part-time dispatch-records specialists, and two part-time community service officers.
