The Santa Clara County jail system is the 5th largest in the state of California, and the 20th largest in the United States. Annually, the Santa Clara County Department of Corrections books approximately 65,000 inmates.

The Santa Clara County’s primary jail facility is the Main Jail Complex. The Main Jail complex is divided into two parts, the North and the South. The Main Jail North can potentially hold up to 919 inmates at one time. The North facility uses a management model called “direct supervision,” which encompasses the architectural design of the facility, the staff within the facility and the inmates are monitored by a positive behavior role. The South Jail Complex has a capacity of approximately 674 inmates and was built in 1956. The South facility is only used for inmates with cases that are located in Palo Alto.
Elmwood Correctional Facility – Male Facility & Female Facility

The Elmwood Male facility is located in Milpitas and currently employs 265 correctional officers and 25 administrative staff employees. The Elmwood Facility for Men only houses minimum and medium security risk male inmates.
The Elmwood Female facility was built in 1964 and is the located in the northeast portion of the Elmwood facility. The Elmwood female facility can house up to approximately 500 female inmates at one time. The Elmwood Female facility staffs approximately 81 correctional officers, four sergeants and seven custodial staff members.
