The Ranchita-Warner Springs Substation first opened in 1993. Prior to that year, resident deputies worked from home! Small but efficient, it continues to provide law enforcement services to the communities of Warner Springs, Ranchita and Borrego Springs, along with the Santa Ysabel, Los Coyotes and Mesa Grander Indian Reservations. Although the population in the substation’s territory is also small (comprised of roughly 1800 people) the area it covers is vast. The substation is responsible for patrolling 1,400 square miles, which is one third of the county and is the largest area in square miles — than any other station in San Diego.

The Ranchita-Warner Springs Sheriff’s Substation jurisdiction ranges from ten miles of the Mexican border to the Riverside county line, and from the Imperial County line to a few miles of the Ramona community and the eastern slopes of the Palomar Mountain range. It is located 71 miles northeast of downtown San Diego.

The substation started off in an even smaller venue: as a portable trailer in Ranchita. Then the County of San Diego Public Works Department moved out of an old county road station and the Sheriff moved in.

The Warner Springs Ranch is a noted tourist hot-spot thanks to its natural hot springs, golf course, and a glider port that brings in thousands of visitors throughout the year.
