The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is the chief law enforcement agency in the county, including both incorporated cities and the unincorporated areas, like Del Mar, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, Poway, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach and Vista. 4,000 employees, both sworn officers and professional support staff, are employed here. The department provides general law enforcement, detention and court services for San Diego County in a service area that is about 4,200 square miles in size. Because the Department is large, it has been organized into six service groups: Office of the Sheriff, Law Enforcement Services, Detention Facility Services, Court Services, Human Resource Services and Management Services.
The Sheriff, who is elected by the residents of San Diego County, is the chief executive of the department. He manages seven major detention facilities as well as eight major patrol stations, four patrol substations, a crime laboratory and wide array of support operations that are key to providing full law enforcement coverage for all of San Diego. The Sheriff’s Department has dedicated itself to preserve the peace, make arrests, prevent unlawful disturbances and investigate public offenses. To accomplish these tasks, the Sheriff has a wide array of both general and specialized law enforcement operations at his disposal. Some of these are patrol, traffic, investigations, crime prevention, crime labs, crime analysis, criminal intelligence, narcotics enforcement, emergency services, licensing and communications. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department needs this many services, since it responds to nearly half a million calls from the public, per year.
The Sheriff’s Department headquarters is located in The John F. Duffy Administrative Center, in Kearny Mesa, San Diego. The Sheriff, his executive staff and many of his administrative support units were first housed in this location in 1990, after decades of being warehoused in downtown San Diego next to the old Central Jail. The move allowed the Department to combine many services that had been scattered around San Diego into a more modern and high-tech space.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department also controls seven detention facilities. Male arrestees are booked at the San Diego Central Jail and Vista Detention Facility, while females are booked at the Las Colinas and Vista Detention Facilities. The remaining jails house inmates who are directly under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff.
In January 2000, the former San Diego County Marshal’s Office merged with the Sheriff’s Department. Since that time, the Sheriff has provided court security for the San Diego Superior Court.
Emergency Services Dispatchers are also handled by the Sheriff’s Department. They take over 1,600 calls each day, and about one-third are 9-1-1 calls. The center provides communications services for a myriad of other county agencies, too, including Public Works, Roads Department, Probation, and the District Attorney’s Office.
