Imperial Beach has a lot of history. The city was founded in 1887 when R. R. Morrison, a real estate developer, filed a subdivision map with the San Diego County Clerk to create a summer retreat for the people of Imperial Valley. The name ‘Imperial Beach” was coined as part of a marketing strategy. South San Diego’s first school was constructed also constructed here in 1888. Fast forward to 1983. That’s the year the Imperial Beach Sheriff’s Station began providing contract law enforcement services to the City of Imperial Beach and the unincorporated communities of Bonita, Sunnyside, Chula Vista, Lincoln Acres, Proctor Valley, San Miguel Mountain, Otay Valley and Otay Mesa.
On July 1 2009, the station received a one year grant from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to help it deal with the large number of alcohol related crimes that have been committed in this touristy town. This new program provides for the training of alcohol licensees and their staffs, as well as inspections of all ABC licensees based on ABC guidelines. But most of all it encourages community input on alcohol related issues. The program even has a special Responsible Retailer Program Deputy (RRP), who acts as a liaison between all law enforcement personnel, the city, the retailers and community groups on alcohol related topics.
