The County of San Benito is located in the Coast Range Mountains, south of San Jose. Over 55,000 people reside in San Benito County, with nearly two-thirds of the population living in the county seat, Hollister. San Benito County was established in 1874, encompassing 1,396 square miles. Since the time it was established as a county, law enforcement in San Benito has been provided by the Sheriff’s Department.There are sixteen units and divisions within the Sheriff’s Office that include: 911, Agricultural Investigations, Civil, Chaplain Program, Coroner, Corrections, Court Security, Explorer Program, Investigations, K9 Unit, Office of Emergency Services, Off-Road Enforcement, Patrol, Unit Reserves, School Resource Officer, and Volunteer Mounted Search and Rescue.

The officers of the Patrol Division are the first responders in the county. The Agricultural Investigations Unit handles any crimes related to the agricultural industry, like thefts of crops or equipment. The K9 Unit assists with suspect apprehension, drug detection, search and rescue missions, crowd control, officer protection and public awareness.

The Corrections Division of the Sheriff’s Department oversees the San Benito County Jail system. 

The original San Benito Jail was built in 1874. It housed up to 50 prisoners in shared cells. The old jail building is still in existence, but a new facility was built in 1992.

The new 28,000 square foot facility is rated to hold a maximum of 124 inmates. Inmate workers are sent to various county agencies to assist with work projects. The Corrections Division is made up of 32 correctional deputies, sergeants and administrative and maintenance staff.

The jail has two maximum-security modules that house up to 27 inmates each and two medium security modules that are rated for 35 inmates each. Female inmates are housed in two separate housing units- 8 in maximum security, and 10 in medium security. The average inmate population in San Benito County is 100.

Inmates are provided with a variety of programs that include GED, ESL, Life skills, Basic Computer Skills, AA and NA, Recovery Group for Men & Women, Planned Parenthood, and Ministry services.

The Sheriff’s Department also offers a Work Alternative Program in lieu of incarceration. To qualify, the person must be given a jail sentence of 40 days or less and a $30 fee is charged to participate.

Inmates are permitted one hour of visitation each week. Appointments must be made 24 hours in advance. Adult visitors need to have a valid photo ID. Each visit can have one adult and two children.
