Placer County is spread across 1,503 square miles. The men and women of the Placer County Sheriff’s Department are responsible for protecting the lives and property of those living in the unincorporated areas in the county.

The officers in the Patrol Division are the first responders to calls for service. They enforce vehicle and criminal code regulations, and investigate misdemeanor and felony crimes. There are 120 uniformed officers and supervisors in the division who provide 24-hour protection.

The Corrections Division is responsible for administering the jails, both Placer County Jail and the facility at the Lake Tahoe station.  The division staffs up to 100 Correctional Officers, Sergeants, Deputies, and clerical staff. 

There are special units within the department as well. These include a Marine Unit, K9 Unit, Search and Rescue, Special Enforcement, and Special Operations.

Anyone arrested within the county will likely be taken to the Placer County Jail.

Substation Information

The Sheriff’s Department operates a few substations in order to better serve the community. These are located in Colfax, Tahoe, Loomis, and Fairfield.

Law enforcement services for the City of Colfax are contracted with the Placer County Sheriff. Six deputies and a sergeant man the station, handling the area between Colfax and Donner summit, and protecting the city’s 1500 residents and businesses.

The substation in Tahoe City covers the largest portion of Lake Tahoe. Communities served by this station include Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista, carnelian Bay, Cedar Flat, Dollar Point, Tahoe City, Sunnyside, Pineland, Homewood, Kingswood, Northstar, Martis Valley, Alpine Meadows, Olympic Valley, Lahontan, Timilick, Sierra Meadows, Ponderosa Ranchos and Murphy Meadows.

The City of Loomis has contracted its law enforcement services with the Placer County Sheriff. The areas served by this station include the communities of Newcastle, Ophir, Penryn, Loomis, Granite Bay, West Roseville/ Dry Creek area, Sunset Estates, Rural Lincoln and Sheridan. There are 33 patrol officers who work out of this station.
