Mammoth Lakes is the only incorporated community in Mono County. The area surrounding the town is full of hot springs and rhyolite domes. With attractions like the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and the Ansel Adams Wilderness nearby, the town of Mammoth Lakes sees thousands of visitors each year.
When the Town of Mammoth Lakes was first incorporated in 1984, law enforcement services were contracted with the Mono County Sheriff. The following year, the town decided to form its own police department. The newly formed Mammoth Lakes Police Department began serving the community as soon as the contract with the county Sheriff’s Department ended in June 1986.
Today, twenty sworn officers and three civilian personnel staff comprise the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. It is the mission of officers to provide the town with quality law enforcement while building partnerships within the community to help prevent crime, maintain public trust and enhance the quality of life throughout.
The two main divisions of the MLPD are Administration and Patrol. The Administration Division handles property and evidence, records, animal control and wildlife management. The Patrol Division is responsible for patrol and traffic duties, providing investigative services, school resource officer, Search and Rescue, Bike Patrol, Mounted Patrol and Honor Guard.
