The City of Ukiah is the hub of Mendocino County. Incorporated in 1876, Ukiah is located about 100 miles north of San Francisco, along the northern coast of California. It was once ranked number one among California’s best small towns to live in and sixth in the United States.

Ukiah is well-known for its wine production and is home to some of the most prestigious wine labels in the country.The Ukiah Police Department is responsible for providing a variety of law enforcement services to the community. There are currently 32 sworn officers in the Department as well as 10 civilian employees. There is a staff of Reserve Officers to help support personnel.

Twenty-two of the sworn officers are assigned to uniform patrol division. The main priority of patrol officers is to respond to service calls in the community and provide proactive law enforcement. There are specialty assignments within the division, such as Traffic Officer, Field Training Officer, SWAT and a Cadet Program Manager. Along with duties of responding to community calls, officers conduct initial investigations of crimes, deaths, and accidents as well as make arrests, issue criminal and traffic citations and transport prisoners.

When a person is arrested in Ukiah, they will be transported to the Mendocino County Jail. They will be booked into the system, be fingerprinted and photographed, and a background check and warrant search will be done. During booking, a bail amount will be set. Once booking is complete, the defendant may be bailed out by a friend, family member or licensed bail bondsman.
