The Parker Center Jail was built in 1954 with a grand vision in mind: “The efficiently designed, eight-story building will include all administrative offices and staff units, central detectives and patrol divisions, and the Traffic Bureau. One floor will be occupied by the nations’ finest crime laboratory. A newly designed police radio and communications network will serve as the city’s nerve center, capable of handling all civil emergencies”, contemporaries raved. Indeed, The Parker Center Jail has continued to live up to its vision for many years, helping to define the LAPD, but it is now one of the oldest jails in Southern California. These, days booking time for a defendant can take well over 12 hours.

The jail was expanded and updated in 1999, and it remains an ever-evolving division that tries to keep up with changing times and a growing Los Angeles population. It is best known by its nickname, ‘The Glass House’ because of its large glass windows. Parker Center is considered an historic site and tours are offered if you want a look inside. A new LAPD Metro Center Jail has been built to replace it, but has not opened to to economic circumstances.
