The Los Angeles Police Department 77th District Police Station is one of the largest jails in Los Angeles. It serves over 18 divisions, including Athens Park, Chesterfield Square, Crenshaw, Gramercy Park, Hyde Park, South Park-51st and Menlo, Vermont Knolls, Vermont Park and View Heights. Anyone arrested in these areas will be taken to 77th Street where the waiting time to get the defendant through the system and into this jail often takes as long as 12 to 24 hours.
Defendants booked into smaller police stations that don’t have jails, like the Southeast Community Police Station, are taken to the 77th. Officers who arrest people from different areas also use this jail if it is the closest available.
The 77th Street Community Police Station and Jail serves well over 175,000 people, even though it only covers an area of 11.9 square miles. Its historic neighborhoods are some of the most culturally diverse in Los Angeles. The 77th Street Jail falls under the jurisdiction of South Bureau. Their front is desk open 24 hours a day for walk in service.
This station has pledged to do its utmost as a police department to “keep society free from crime and disorder”. They have recently set official goals to:
- Reduce Part I crimes by 15 percent
- Strengthen the Community-Police Partnership
- Build morale through leadership and an employee-centered station
- Reduce serious injury and fatal related traffic collisions by 10 percent
- Maintain and strengthen the Area Safe Parks Program
In 2009, the 77th sought to strengthen their Community-Police Partnership by increasing their juvenile programs and volunteer opportunities. They also encourage community participation in Block Club activities and they intend to strengthen their Area Safe Park Programs by bringing recreational activities back to neighborhood parks.
