The Department’s Patrol Division is made up of 150 law enforcement officers who provide services throughout the county.
Within the Patrol Division is the Boat Safety Unit. These officers are responsible for marine enforcement and rescues on all of the county’s various waterways. The El Dorado Sheriff has jurisdiction over 54 square miles of Lake Tahoe’s south end. The Department operates a 27 foot vessel on the lake that is designed to handle this marine environment similar to the Alaskan coast. There is also a Whitewater Raft Patrol that operates on a 20-mile stretch of the South Fork American River, over Class IV rapids throughout the May-September rafting season.
El Dorado’s K9 Unit has been around since 1981. Today, there are six canine teams, with both German Shepherds and Belgium Malinois. The teams are trained to in tracking, area and building searches, and handler protection. They are also cross-trained in article and narcotics detection. The teams are on-call 24-hours a day.
Twelve members of the department make up El Dorado’s SWAT Team. The team is deployed an average of 6-16 times a year. They take part in high-risk searches, arrest warrants, and barricaded subjects. The team also provides tactical training to patrol deputies. Each team member trains an average of 15 hours each month and must pass a firearms and physical fitness test to stay on the team. SWAT has a 9 member Crisis Negotiations Team.
