My boyfriend was arrested this morning for carjacking and I want to get him out of jail. He really doesn’t have any family, so I’m all he has. His bail is $100,000 and we both have steady jobs. I have $400 that I can give for a down payment today and we can both make weekly payments. My problem is that every bail bondsman I talk to says that I’m not eligible to sign because I’m not old enough or established enough (I’m 19, he’s 20). I don’t understand what the problem is.
When you bail someone out of jail, you’re not just guaranteeing to pay the bondsman’s fee (which will be 10% of the bail amount, so in this case, $10,000), you’re guaranteeing the defendant will go to court. If the defendant skips bail, the bondsman and the cosigner will need to pay a penalty to the court (in this case, $100,000, which is your boyfriends bail amount).Based on your age, it’s likely the bail bonds agents you’ve spoken don’t feel as if you can guarantee that type of payment, should something go wrong.
