Operations Division

The Operations Division is divided into two units; Patrol and Investigations.

Deputies assigned to Patrol respond to emergency and non-emergency calls 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. They investigate crimes, make arrests, provide preventive patrols, and render assistance when necessary.

Investigations Division handles the follow-up of major crimes reported to the Department. They recover stolen property, identify and apprehend offenders, collect, preserve and prepare evidence, and testify at trials.

Special Units

Stanislaus Drug Enforcement Agency was created in 1974 with a federal grant. It began as a task force working to combat street level drug dealers. Today it has grown into a much larger task force that includes police departments from various surrounding cities as well as agents from FBI, DEA, IRS, and INS. The Air Support Team plays a major role in patrol operations, narcotics enforcement and search & rescue missions.

A Bagpipe and Drum Corps, formed by the Callanish Pipe Band, serves as the County Sheriff's Honor Guard. They play at Training Academy Graduation Ceremonies, funerals, parades, sporting events, and other special ceremonies.

Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) began operating in 2009, in response to increasing violence of inmates. They aid in maintaining the safety and security of correctional facilities.

The Dive Team consists of nine members, a sergeant and lieutenant. Their duties are to recover evidence, drowning victims, assist in investigations involving items being placed in the water and swift water rescues. They respond to 20-25 calls per year.

The Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team (aka Bomb Squad) is made up of five trained technicians. They handle the disposal and investigation of explosive devices and suspected explosive devices. There are usually between 60-70 calls for their service each year.

The K9 Unit provides trained police dogs and handlers 24-hours a day. They are for the protection of citizens, assist in apprehending suspects and give added protection to deputy sheriffs.

The Mounted Unit, established in 1973, currently has 16 members. They are typically deployed over 50 times each year. Their primary function is crowd control, maintaining or restoring order at large events such as fairs, festivals, and concerts. They also take part in search and rescue operations.

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Hostage Negotiation Teams are effective tools for law enforcement in bringing peaceful resolutions of critical incidents.
