The Detention Division of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for the processing, care and management of inmates being held in lawful detention. The Detention Division is staffed with over 300 employees, all of whom are committed to serving the residents of Sonoma County and California by providing a safe, secure and humane environment for both inmates and staff members of the Sonoma County Jail.

This facility opened in 1991. At that time it was a “new generation” facility, designed to give “direct supervision” rather than the previous “linear” design of earlier jails in Sonoma County. It was constructed to house up to 500 inmates, but that capacity was quickly reached. An expansion was opened in 1997 to allow for an additional 290 beds. This facility houses medium and maximum security inmates, both pre-trial and sentenced.
The direct supervision design of the jail allows officers to make contact with inmates and encourages the use of interpersonal skills. Officers are there to provide a leadership role and to be available to inmates. There are currently 145 Correctional Deputies, 18 sergeants, 5 lieutenants, and one captain at this facility.
North County Jail

Located five miles north of Santa Rosa, the site of this facility used to be the home of the Santa Rosa Army airfield during World War II. When the war ended, the airfield was deactivated and subdivided into several parcels. One of those parcels became the “honor farm” for 35 minimum security inmates in 1967. The facility has grown to house a capacity of 559 inmates. In 1997, when the new expansion at the main detention facility opened, 172 inmates were transferred over there.
This facility covers 15.3 acres, with 5.91 of those acres used for the Agricultural Program. Inmates will be approved to participate in the work crews at booking. They may not have violence charges, a history of escape, or any disciplinary behavior programs. There are over 200 inmates working on crews, doing a variety of work on and off site. The staff at this facility includes 51 Correctional Deputies, 4 sergeants, one lieutenant, and one captain, as well as 7 legal processors.

Bail Responsibilities
When you enter into a bail agreement with a bondsman, you become what is known as an “indemnitor.” You are agreeing to be the person responsible for the bail contract and the defendant. By signing an agreement with a bail bondsman, you agree to pay the bail bond premium in full. This is the fee that is set by the state of California. It is equal to 10% of the total bail amount. This fee is non-refundable. Even if the defendant is found not guilty or charges are not filed, this fee must be paid.
It is your responsibility to make sure that, once released, the defendant shows up at any court appearances. If the defendant fails to appear, you are responsible to help the bondsman return the defendant to jail.
