The Merced County Sheriff's Department provides traditional law enforcement services to the community, including patrols and traffic enforcement. The department is also responsible for administering the Merced County Jail.
The Court Services Division consists of about 50 sheriff's employees who provide bailiff duties, judicial protection and general law enforcement. Several correctional officers provide transportation services between the courts and jails and monitor inmates. Sheriff Security Attendants monitor the safety of courthouse visitors, staff and inmates.
The Merced County Sheriff's Department has several special operations units, including a Dive Team, K9 Unit, Special Enforcement Response Team (SERT) and Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT).
There are currently 10 divers on the Dive Team. Divers travel across the state to aid flood victims. They are on call 24-hours a day and are most often called into service to help recover drowning victims and evidence from the county's bodies of water. The K9 Unit is used to assist patrols in tracking and apprehending suspects. The patrol dogs are also trained to search for illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.
The SERT officers are trained to help with protecting jail staff and inmates. They are a deterrent to inmate violence, which gives staff members and correctional officers more confidence to perform their jobs.
The SWAT Team takes part in high-risk situations, such as suspected snipers, barricaded gunmen, armed suspects with hostages, potential riot situations, and VIP security.
