You May Not Need a Bail Bond

In my bail experience with drinking and driving in Los Angeles County, most DUI arrestees will be held at the jail for a several hours, then release them on their Own Recognizance ("OR") or on a Citation.

In Los Angeles County, a bail bond for a DUI generally becomes necessary when there has been an accident (with or without injury), minors are involved, or the defendant has previous DUI convictions. Otherwise, you would be better to wait for an OR release. If you call the jailer, they can often advise you of the charges and if an O.R. is likely.

When You Need a Bail Bondsman

Bail amounts are set out in the County's "Bail Schedule" and the bail will increased based on the severity of the incident. The DUI bail I arrange in Los Angeles County generally falls into one of four catagories:

$10,000 for a basic DUI.
$50,000 for cases involving accidents.
$100,000 or more when there are multiple injuries, death occurs, or a prior record of DUI is present.
Significantly higher bail is set with mitigating circumstances such as multiple injuries or deaths or the driver is a minor. Other circumstances may also substantially increase the bail amount as well.

Paying for a Bail Bond

The fee for a bail bond in California is 10% of the bail. Payment is expected in advance of service. Most of my Los Angeles clients pay for the bail bond using a major credit card. I also accept cash.
