Los Angeles Domestic Violence Bail Amounts
In Los Angeles County, domestic violence charges carry one of two bail amounts. In my experience as a bail agent, bail for domestic disputes in L.A. will be set at either $20,000 or $50,000. Most often, I see the higher bail amount.
Generally, the difference is "evidence" of physical contact. This may be as simple as a scratch or red mark which may indicate a physical altercation. As someone bailing out a friend or family member being held on domestic violence, please be aware that for safety purposes, the officers involved would rather mistakenly detain someone than risk a more volatile or violent situation. In the long run, some people who are arrested are not formally charged.
The cost, or fee, for a bail bond is 10% of the full bail amount. Correspondingly, the cost to obtain release from jail for someone charged with domestic violence or battery in Los Angeles is $2,000 when the bail amount is $20,000; or $5,000 when the bail amount is $50,000. There are no hidden charges or taxes.
