X-Ray Scanners Approved For Riverside Jails
A request by Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to have six X-ray scanners be used to search inmate jail cells has been approved by the County Board of Supervisors.
The jails serviced by these scanners will include:
- Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside
- Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning
- Blythe Jail in Blythe
- Indio Jail in Indio
- Southwest Jail in Murrieta
The measure passed 4-0, with Supervisor John Tavaglione being absent. The total cost for the purchase is estimated to be $153,000. Astrophysics Inc., which makes the devices, will provide the devices “to correctional personnel at the county’s five detention facilities, where scanners will aid in ‘identifying and reducing the introduction of weapons and contraband and assist in the detection of weapons and contraband already in the possession of inmates’”, reports Valley News.

Riverside County Will Charge Prisoners for Their Stay
On Tuesday, the Riverside County Supervisors approved the decision to charge county prisoners $142.42 per day for the length of their sentences at the Riverside County Jail.
The idea was proposed by county supervisor Jeff Stone. He feels that this plan could save the county between $3 million and $5 million each year. Riverside County jails house nearly 60,000 inmates annually.
Even though many criminals will not be able to afford paying this fee, it is estimated that nearly 25% of those who come through the jail system will be able to pay it.

Kidnap Charge Leads to Riverside Bail Bondsman’s Arrest
In an appauling story, a Riverside bail bondsman has been arrested for the alleged kidnap and ransom of one of his own clients.
Bail Bonds United of Riverside, posted a bond for a defendant in July, 2010. Upon the defendant’s release, he was unable to pay the total amount of the bail bond fee, or ”premium” as it is known. Co-owner of the bail bond company, Damion Paul Perkins was apperently dissatisfied and took matters to an extreme.
