San Mateo Approves Funding for New Jail
This past Tuesday, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved the spending of $16.5 million for the construction of a new jail, in spite of protests from opponents.
The decision was reportedly unanimous. The new facility is estimated to cost $155 million. The board approved contracts with project managers and architects and came to an agreement with local trade unions. Construction is scheduled to begin at the new location for the jail in June.
There were about twelve people waving signs protesting the plan to build the new jail, which has no official funding source to date. The money will likely need to be financed. The protestors urged the board to look for alternatives for sending people to jail.
Sheriff Munks has been pushing for a new facility, citing the overcrowding of the Maguire Jail Correctional Facility and deterioration of the Women’s Jail as reasons to build a new jail. The new project will also create about 300 construction jobs.
The county has taken this plan more seriously now that Read more »
San Mateo County’s New Realignment Plan
Because of the state’s new jail realignment plan, San Mateo County has reportedly decided to implement its own realignment plan in order to accommodate the hundreds of expected inmates that will be sent to the county jails instead of prisons.
It is estimated that the county will see about 600 new inmates in the jails within two years. This is one reason for county supervisors to approve plans for a new jail quickly.
Since October of last year, San Mateo County jail has received 66 inmates who would have otherwise served their sentence at a state prison. They are either housed in the jails or placed in a supervised probation program.

San Mateo Denied Money for Jail Construction
San Mateo County jail will not be receiving any state funding for its needed jail construction, despite all of its efforts.
In October, San Mateo County was told that it should not bother with applying for those funds. It needs between $155 million and $160 million in order to complete the project. County officials attempted to lobby the Authority anyway.
California is providing $602 million in funding to 11 counties across the state in order to make improvements to their jails. The counties of Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange were each allotted $100 million by the California Corrections Standards Authority, with smaller amounts going to Kings, Imperial, Santa Barbara, Madera, Stanislaus, Shasta, Tulare and Sutter counties.
Assistant Sheriff Trisha Sanchez, along with Deputy City Manager Mary McMillan, attended the public meeting on Thursday to plead with the agency once more. Sheriff Greg Munks stated, “We wanted to go onto the record. There have been counties approved who are years from sticking a shovel in the ground; you ought to award the money to us.”

San Mateo County to Construct Bigger Jail
County elected officials in San Mateo have voted to build a bigger San Mateo County Jail. Members of the County Board of Supervisors approved the measure in a 4-1 vote on Tuesday, allowing Sheriff Greg Munks to move forward with the proposal. County officials estimate the cost to build the new detention facility will run between $145 million and $160 million.
Although Supervisor Dave Pine had warned that construction of the new jail would put additional stress on a county already facing a $50 million deficit, proponents of the plan pointed out that up to $100 million in state grant funding could be sought.
Pine said that instead of building a bigger jail that the larger focus should be on keeping people out of custody. Sheriff Munks, however pointed out that the current jail is running approximately 30 percent over its intended capacity. Because of that, he said, additional space was needed.
At its completion the new, three-story Redwood City Jail will Read more »
