786 Arrested For DUI In OC
Orange County law enforcement officials said they arrested nearly 800 people were on suspicion of DUI between Dec. 16 and Jan. 1. This marks a year-on-year increase of 46 from the number persons arrested during the same period in 2010.
The OC Register has reported that checkpoints took place in Anaheim, Buena Park, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, La Habra, Laguna Niguel and Westminster and DUI Saturation Patrols were deployed in most cities throughout the county.
The crackdown, dubbed “Avoid the 38” involved the California Highway Patrol, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and local police departments. Law enforcement officials said the goal of the Avoid program is to reduce the rate at which citizens are killed or injured.
The AVOID Anti-DUI Program was first launched in Santa Clara County during the winter of 1973 in an effort to bring law enforcement agencies together in countywide clusters to crack down on the drinking driver and reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by alcohol related crashes. A department spokesperson said that funding, provided by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, allows counties to add overtime hours, reassign officers, and conduct public awareness campaigns during the increased enforcement periods.
