Question: What is a bail bond?
Answer: Most simply put: a bail bond is a written and legally binding contract securing bail for a person that was arrested. The contract signer, also known as the “Indemnitor,” is responsible for the fee stipulated in the contract. Most often the fee is 10% of the full bail amount. The person signing is also ensuring the defendant’s appearance in court.
Bail is an amount set by a judge, which allows a defendant to be free from jail until the completion of the court case. Bail can be achieved through a bail bond or the full bail amount can be paid in cash to the court or jail. Since bail is often in the tens of thousands of dollars, using a bondsman for a bail bond is more reasonable for most people.
