How Does a Bail Business Operate

Question: Well I’ve been so interested in the bail industry because I have no experience with it directly and always wondered how a bail bonds business operates. Could you give us a brief overview as to what it is you do?

Answer: Well what we do is very simply one thing, and one thing only: that is bail bonds. Most people hear that and immediately think of the neon signs and perhaps a man smoking a cigar in a late night dark place that looks a little seedy and scary. Our business is Read more »

Los Angeles Jail Suicide Points to Men’s Central Jail Deputies “Cheating The System”

July 23rd, 2010

LASD Mens Central Jail Downtown Los Angeles In a sad turn of events, an inmate committed suicide inside the Los Angeles County Men’s Central jail when he was left “unchecked” for a period longer than regulated.

According to the L.A. Board of Supervisors report, his death has shed a light on two Los Angeles Sheriff Deputies who allegedly “cheated” the bar code system to avoid regular checking of inmate cells. They were later fired for their actions. Additionally, another 8 deputies were disciplined.

This scandal by Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputies, being called ”Scannergate”, was discovered after an inmate hung himself in March 2009.  This particular inmate was on “high-security” watch.

A falsified log was found by investigators at that time, showing that deputies had scanned all points within 35 seconds. However, this would be an impossible feat in the enormous Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail as the checkpoints were too far apart to be scanned that quickly.

What to Look for When Choosing a Bail Bondsman

July 20th, 2010

Bail bondsmen are an important asset to a defendant in a criminal proceeding.  The experience a bail bondsman possesses can greatly work  in your favor. Alternatively, inexperience could cost you dearly. It is important to know the facts and have a clear understanding when it comes to the different options and situations you may experience.

Bondsman Licensing

By law, all bail bonds companies must be fully licensed by the state they are operating under. For instance, if you are arrested in Los Angeles, and are in need of a bail bondsman, then the company you inquire about should be licensed by the State of California Department of Insurance.

Experience is Paramount

Like most industries, quality in a bondsman comes from experience.  Operating under the perplexing environment of a court room or jail system, a bail agent needs to be familiar and knowledgeable in the specific court or jail where you need assistance. From state to state and county to county, each jail system is set up differently, and only through experience, can a bondsman properly operate the laws in the defendant’s best interest.

Additionally, a bondsman with experience will Read more »

The Difference Between Bail and Bail Bonds

July 14th, 2010

Frequently, people interchange the words “bail” and “bail bonds.” To the judicial system, both words are very important in the process of releasing the accused from jail, but they represent different meanings.

What is Bail?

Upon the arrest of a defendant, most will be allowed to post bail. Bail will be set based on the type of crime and threat to society. The defendant or a guarantor, pays the court in order to secure his or her release. The detainee will be granted release from incarceration once all monies have cleared, or “posted,” with the understanding that they will be legally obligated to attend all future court hearings in which they were involved. Bail money acts as a transaction to ensure security; therefore, in the event that the detainee fails to appear in court at their scheduled time, the court will keep all monies, if necessary. If they do hold their end of the agreement, defendants can receive the returned bail money upon completion of all criminal proceedings, regardless of the outcome.

What is a Bail Bond?

In the event that a defendant cannot or does not want pay the total amount of bail, a bail bondsman can be utilized for a “bail bond”. In exchange for Read more »
